Welcome Back! Let's Get Reacquainted.

Happy New Year...almost.

I have my coffee and if you're new here, welcome.

A little about me...

  • I'm Kelly (she/her.) I'm a happily married Gen-Xer and dog-mom to our (now senior) pup named Gracie.
  • I'm an INFJ and a HSP.
  • I'm politically liberal.
  • I gravitate toward nature-based spirituality and I embrace the hippie-crone qualities of my personality and this stage of life. If I attend services, it's at our local UU church.
  • I'm an educator, a copywriter and a community builder

Some of my favorite things...
  • travel and exploration
  • spring and fall
  • being outside in nature
  • cooking (and some baking)
  • early mornings and sunset's golden hour
  • face time with friends and family (and video calls with those far away)
  • local farms and fresh local produce
  • videos of animals, like a panda enjoying a delicious piece of squash
  • reading and writing
  • winter solstice and the rest and stillness of winter
  • fresh sheets and flannel sheets in the winter
  • time by the sea
  • village life
  • my denim overalls, great graphic tees, long cardigans, a warm beanie, pajamas and slippers, my Birks and Bean boots
  • John Denver, Abba, Jimmy Buffett, Michael Franti, acoustic guitar, 60s/70s folk, 70s/80s rock, and 90s alt-rock
  • experiences over stuff
  • dates with my husband
  • Les Miserables, Wicked, Mama Mia
  • Starbucks "medicine balls" (which I make at home)
  • my morning routine
  • Buddha bowls and poke bowls
  • haircut day...very important for maintaining my pixie
  • opening the windows to air out the house
  • afternoon walks with Gracie
  • shoulder-season travel
  • fireplaces and fairy lights
  • decluttering

I will always say no to...

Haricot verts, offal, clutter, smoking, dishonesty, mean-spiritedness, food waste...any waste, apathy, injustice, intolerance.

Where to now?

I'm not sure, but it feels good to be writing again.

Tell me more about you. What do we have in common? From where in the world are you reading? What are some of your favorite things?

While I Wasn't Blogging: Catching Up

After a blink-and-it's-gone-February, I feel like I have finally settled into 2018. Clearly, I have lost my pace when it comes to writing and blogging, but not for a lack of ideas.

While I wasn't blogging...
  • I finished the first semester with my new students from Spain and France and welcomed a handful of new students from Italy for the second semester (and transitioned into second semester with my Spanish and French students).

  • I broke out of my comfort zone and decided to try CrossFit. I feel like the work I had been doing with my trainer prepared me for this transition. I'm getting stronger every week I love the variety with each class and the motivation from the CF community. I even registered for the Open, the annual CrossFit Games. It feels great to be part of a team and I love seeing what my body can do now that it couldn't when I first started in January. It's all about progress, not perfection.

  • I started keeping my nutrition on point with whole, unprocessed foods and looking at macronutrients instead of calories for changes in body composition over weight loss.  I've been working with a nutrition coach who monitors and adjusts my numbers (if needed) every week. I'm in week 11 and down 9 pounds and 10 inches. It works.

  • My husband and I have been delving deeper into real estate investment and are closer than ever to buying our first property. Positive energy welcomed.

  • We've been planning summer travel. My niece will be here in June, so I'm looking forward to some quality time including her first trip to NYC. We're also thinking about where we want to travel while we're in Spain this summer. And as always, I'm checking out flight deals for unexpected long weekends away.

Life is good. I'm outside more, meeting friends IRL whenever possible, reading more offline, doing my thing. I'm excitedly awaiting spring, in spite of the nor'easter knocking on our door.

Ideas are swirling like butterflies. I need to follow a couple of them and see where they lead.

What's new in your world? Any new challenges or pursuits? Inspire me.

Ahora 20: Currently

Happy New Year!
As someone who has a genuine dislike ambiguity about the winter holidays, I am grateful to wake up on January 1st with all of that behind me and nothing but a fresh, clean year filled with opportunity.

Here's what's happening ahora...now, in my world.

Reading...

The Gratitude Diaries by Janice Kaplan.
I loved reading Gretchen Rubin's The Happiness Project, so I thought this could be a great way to frame my year in gratitude. Kaplan organizes the year into seasons with themes like marriage and family, health, or money and finance. She is a proponent of the gratitude journal, and admittedly, I am enjoying the process of reflecting on my day by writing in my own gratitude journal. It's a quick and easy read and one of the most powerful takeaways is the power of perspective.

Eating...
A lot of soups and stews. We're even having one today, especially good after last night's snow. Tis the season. What's your favorite broth based soup or stew?

Ali's recipe from Gimme Some Oven for a 20-minute Moroccan Chickpea Soup may make it into our winter rotation. Doesn't this look good?

Drinking...
More water and tea. I'm making an honest effort to drink less coffee and more water and tea, and ultimately, tea with no sweetener. Here are a few of my favorites.

Planning...
My vision and intent for 2017. I did a vision board at the end of 2016, and it has already started working. Crazy! Ask and you shall receive. Want to make your own? Start here

Watching...
Like most in my social media circle, I am watching and loving This is Us. It's well written, relatable, and heartfelt. The musical score is pretty good too.

Listening to...
My standard Pandora channels: Jack Johnson, Spanish Guitar, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Jimmy Buffett, and French Cafe Radio. And my podcasts:  Side Hustle School and Happier with Gretchen Rubin.

Any recommendations?

Trying...
A light box. This one has low/medium/high settings and you can set it for 15, 30, and 45 minutes. Who knows whether it works, but for me, like others do with the salt lamp, it's worth trying. And speaking of salt lamps, any recommendations on size? Does it work for you?

So that's about it. It's winter, but it is pretty.

What's happening ahora, now, in your world?

Are you a Word of the Year person? Please share your 2017 word and inspire me.

Ahora 19: Peeking out of the Rabbit Hole

I know that it has been a while; for me too.

Every time I think about sitting down to write, something else take precedence, and it just never gets done.

While I have a few minutes this morning, I wanted to peek out of the rabbit hole and say hello.

I miss you.

Thanks for sticking around.

Here's what is trending in my world these days.

Learning
The in's and out's of my new job. It is like a rabbit hole; I begin one project, which detours into another and another. I LOVE my new job. I love working with my students and my co-workers, and the flexibility of location independence is a dream come true. Learning the platforms and grading assignments in a fairly self paced curriculum take time. There are times when I am inundated and other times, less so. I wouldn't change a thing.

Drinking
Hot mulled apple cider. And Cinnamon Dolce coffee; I can thank my niece for this new obsession.

Reading and planning to cook my way through...

Eating
Dinner With Julie's quick cassoulet. It's quick, it's easy, and it is delicious! It makes the house smell amazing too! With a glass of red, an arugula salad, and a warm baguette... bliss.

Watching
This is Us. If you haven't started this series, you can stream it free on Hulu. It's that good.
And the soundtrack is playlist worthy.

Exploring
Boston. We had friends in town last weekend, and we had the chance to play tour guide.

In Baah-stin speak, the corner store.

No matter where I go, Boston, you're my home.

Loving
Being somewhat of a stay-at-home-dog-mom. It sounds ridiculous, I know; however, I love having the flexibility to take Gracie outside at lunch time to play.

She seems to like it too.

And squeak toys are the best.

Fall colors? Yes, please.

And Snap Chat filters for days...if you're on Snap Chat, add me... https://www.snapchat.com/add/alovelylifeind. I'm always looking for fun accounts to follow.

Celebrating
My Mom and Dad's 50th Anniversary. My brother and I planned to surprise my parents back in July. We did it, and it was wonderful.

And Happy 4th Birthday to my lovely space in the universe. A Lovely Life, Indeed turned four on November 1st.

Stressing
About the election...

This election gives me anxiety. The energy, the ads, the Facebook rants, the surprising jaw-dropping views of those I hold dear...I guess I do live in a bubble. A warm, happy bubble.

And this election compels me to retreat.

But, it's critical that we get out there and vote, my American friends.

We don't have to agree on candidate or ideology, but we do have to voice our choice.

It's a big deal...and the world is watching.

Still not sure? Take the quiz from I Side With and see who parallels your thinking the most.

Also, read up on your state's ballot questions and carefully consider your options down ballot. Consider future legislation and the Supreme Court; it's not just about the executive branch.

Okay. I am going to go and get some work done. Tell me...
What's happening now in your world?
Let's catch up.

Linking up with Kristin today.

Ahora 14: Back Again

Ahora is back from hiatus. I love seeing what others are up to every month and learning about what crosses their radar. Naturally, I thought it would be fun to do my own.

Ahora, meaning Now in Spanish, is a monthly series that gives you the highlights of what's trending in my life each month.

Reading...
Big Magic. I had the pleasure of seeing Liz Gilbert on her Big Magic book tour.

I listened to the Magic Lessons podcast over the summer, and although I've had the book on my nightstand for a while, I began listening to the audio book, read by Liz Gilbert, herself. It's a motivating read; a permission slip, if you will, for the innate desire we all have at some point, to be makers. "If you're alive," she says, "you're a creative person."

Watching...
It seems like everyone is watching Making a Murderer. I started it, but I never finished it. I'm not one for crime dramas. In fact, I haven't watched much of anything lately, with the exception of the debates and a back-to-back session of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Eating...
Lately, I have been eating a lot of avocado toast. For me, it's a simple supper. It's perfect for when the Señor is eating sardines on salad...a simple supper for him. I smash half of an avocado on two slices of toasted Ezekiel sesame bread. I grind some pink Himalayan salt on top, and dinner is served, with or without a glass of red wine.

Drinking...
With the warmer than seasonal temperatures we have had here in New England this winter, there have been plenty of reasons to justify my iced coffee; however, I have begun drinking more tea. When the weather is cold or raw, nothing is better than a hot cup of herbal tea when I get home from school.

Doing...
Homework. I'm taking two more classes this semester: one on language acquisition and one on community service learning.

Visiting...
Last year, I was thrilled to connect with a representative of Select Registry, a "portfolio of more than 300 quality assured bed and breakfasts, inns, and hotels throughout North America." As a result, I was selected, among other travel writers, to visit and review various properties in my area. What a treat! The first reviews are coming soon.

Listening to...
Podcasts. I can't get enough. As I mentioned, I listened to all of Magic Lessons this summer. Some of my other favorites include The Simple Show, Happier with Gretchen Rubin, The Chalene Show, and An Uncluttered Life

Are you a podcast fan? What are your favorites?

Loving...
This girl. I found a puppy tooth on the floor last night; her adult teeth are coming in.

And this guy...

And celebrating...
Happy birthday to my badass and now, cancer-free sister-friend. Take a good deep breath and blow out all of your candles. There are a lot of wishes come true coming your way.

That's what's going on in my world these days. How about you? What is happening ahora in your world?

Linking up with Gretchen and Kristen today for What's New with You. Thanks, girls!

Move over PSL...there's a new pumpkin in town

I would not describe myself as being on the cutting edge of anything. So, if you have already had this, I apologize.

Tis the season for pumpkin spice everything.

But pumpkin spiced coffee? I just can't.

Until now.

Sunday was my mother-in-law's 83rd birthday. We gathered at my brother-in-law's for an impromptu get together and she partied like a teenager.

Just kidding...she drank some tea.

It's always fun to see and chat with my nieces and nephews. And as teenagers, they are on the cutting edge of everything.

So, thanks to my niece, Vivian, I have found a new fall favorite.

Behold the Iced Pumpkin Mocha.

Per Vivian, for a medium, you should order it iced, with cream and one melted sugar. I think this may mean liquid sugar, but I'm assuming those in the know will know what that means.

The iced pumpkin mocha is a game changer.

While other coffee shops may offer the same, I can only vouch for Dunkin' Donuts. And thanks, by the way, to Dunks, for the free coffee after a Patriots win. Maybe your local Dunks has a similar promotion for your home team.

It makes for a very happy Monday morning.

This fall, I will be running on Dunkin's iced pumpkin mocha; no pumpkin spice latte for me.

Thanks anyway, Starbucks.

Coffee Catch Up

Ideas swirl around my head like cartoon canaries after a good bump on the head, and at times, having too many options can be just as paralyzing as when there are too few.

So, like ripping off a bandaid, I am here to catch up over my morning coffee, just as if you were sitting across the table with yours...not with well thought out words and pictures, but merely with conversation.

Welcome.

What a summer it has been!

We did a lot of this.

And this.

And this.

And now we're home.

We took the weekend to sleep off residual jet lag and prep for the week ahead.

And here we are.

Let's start with yesterday. I am back at my home school.

It was a whiplash kind of day. Upon arriving at our opening day general session yesterday, I was greeted and then saddened to hear from friends that my position, which at the end of the last school year had been eliminated due to budget cuts, had been re-funded, BUT that I couldn't go back, because I had transferred to another in-district building earlier in the summer.

Wait...What??? Imagine my confusion.

And then, in the eleventh hour, so to speak, as my former colleagues and I trudged into the auditorium for the general session, I was pulled aside by my former principal, assistant principal, and program director who then told me I was "going home."

I am so incredibly grateful to be back in my building. While the other school is wonderful, it just wasn't home. And the welcome I received when I returned that afternoon with my things was overwhelming...so much love and support. I can't wait to see my kiddos! I'm in a Pre-K-4 building...you can imagine the level of cuteness.

And so I'm back. And so very happy. My heart is full.

Vacation was wonderful. In addition to exploring more of Galicia, we visited Toledo, Ă€vila, Salamanca, and Dublin, Ireland on our way back to Boston. I ended up posting a lot of pictures on Instagram, but I did not bring my laptop with me. And so, I didn't do much any writing.

BUT, I did do a lot of reading. I finally read Gone Girl, and Mindy Kaling's memoir, Is Everyone Hanging Out without Me, and the first of the Late Bloomer Series by Betsy Talbott, Wild Rose. I'm reading the second in the series now, English IvyI also read Paris in Love, finished Julia Child's My Life in France, Love with a Chance of Drowning, and The Lost Girls

Now, I'm prepping for school's start next week. I'm trying to get back into my routines and I am looking forward to cooler weather and all things fall.

And my Dad turns 71 on Friday!

I'm hoping to start back in on a regular writing practice again, and start digging through pictures, but for now, this is where I am.

Now, please tell me. How was your summer? What was your best moment? What are you looking forward to this fall?

A Day in the Life...School Edition

Just this week, Kerry, a lifestyle blogger from Till Then, Smile Often and Kaelene, a travel blogger from Unlocking Kiki, posted an overview of their days and they provided an interesting peek into their daily routines.

Thinking this sounded like a fun post, I started thinking about my own routines and what an average working day looks like in my life.

5:00-6:00...Wake up time. I don't set an alarm, but my husband does. Most often, I wake up on my own, but just in case I oversleep, his alarm will get me going.

6:00-6:45...I go downstairs, take my vitamins with some Trop 50 and make my husband's lunch. I hard boil some eggs for the day or for the week and I drink a bottle of water. Then, I get my coffee. I check social media, watch the news, read new posts from some of my favorite bloggers and post in my wellness challenge groups.

6:45-7:10...I make my husband's and my morning Shakeology and have breakfast with him before he leaves for work. My mother-in-law comes downstairs and we catch up before we all go in our own directions.

7:15-7:45...After he leaves, I go back upstairs to shower and get ready for work.

8:15-9:15...I get settled into my classroom, check my work email, drink another bottle of water, and make sure everything is all set for my kindergarten ESL students that will be arriving in a very short time. I also touch base with my team and twice a week, meet with  general education teachers or our literacy coach for collaborative planning or training.

9:30-11:10...After my kinders' Morning Meeting, I take them with me to my classroom for English Language Development and Literacy. During this time, we work on letter and sound correspondence, vocabulary development and word work, and interactive writing and reading.

Many of my kinders are in school for the first time and a few of them are non-English speakers, so teaching them English while teaching them their grade level standards is a challenge. They learn quickly and as a second language learner myself, I am inspired by their ability to successfully navigate between two languages all day. How frustrating it must be for a child to go someplace new, away from their family and comfort, to where few, if any, understand you. But the gains they make will open their world.

11:10-11:40...Lunch with my 2nd grade team. I check my email, respond to challenge group notifications and catch up.

11:40-1:10...2nd grade reading. During this time, I push into classrooms and support English Language Learners during their reading time. We use a program called The Daily 5, and students see real gains in their reading and comprehension. They also see incredible gains in stamina and independence and, since choice is a cornerstone of this program, students develop an early love of reading.

1:10=1:55...2nd grade writing. Depending on the unit of study, I may push in, bringing other ELLs from another room and support students in their writing within the general education classroom. Or I may pull a group of ELL students to my room and teach them in a smaller group.

1:55-2:40...Kindergarten writing. During this time, I teach a small group within a general education classroom. My kinder ELLs work on the same standards as their native speaker peers. For the first part of the year, the emphasis was on story telling...making sure their pictures match their words and that their pictures all had a who, a where, and a what. They also learned how to begin sentences with capital letter and end sentences with punctuation. Now, we're working with informational text and how-to's.

2:45-3:45...Prep. At this time, I write lesson plans, make copies, look for additional resources and go to meetings. If it's my on-week, I have bus duty, corralling kids from late buses into the cafeteria. On the way home, I usually call my mom and chat with her for a few minutes and reconnect.

4:00-8:30...During this time, I am heading to the gym or pressing play on a workout video,  doing some school work, stopping by the grocery store, checking my social media feeds, challenge groups, and blogs, and prepping dinner. My husband gets home and we have eat and reconnect. We watch the news from Spain and then I head upstairs.

8:30-9:30...Pajamas, a bit of reflection, and a book or some tv. At this time, I am calling it a night.

When I'm not in school, it's like a different life.

What do your days look like? Are you a creature of habit? What is the highlight of your day?

Packing for Paris

Good morning! Happy Tuesday.

It's fly day for us. We are packed and off for a mini-vacation in Paris.

Packing for a vacation is a true exercise in want versus need. And when you travel in colder weather, it gets even trickier.

We're only taking carry-on luggage, so every item counts.

For me, here is what is making the cut.

The Bag
When it comes to carry-on luggage, it has to be soft sided spinner. I like having pockets for putting in last minute items and because it's always with me, I don't have to worry about it getting tossed. And it makes for a faster airport exit.

What I Packed
Because I am frequently cold, staying warm is a concern. But I also want to be able to move. No one wants to be this kid...

Luckily, I think I have found the perfect coat. It's a Land's End lightweight packable down 3/4 length coat. It has a hood and, even better, it has a belt to avoid the sleeping bag look of a normal puffer.  I have had it for about a month now and so far, so good. It's warm and roomy, allowing for thicker layers underneath.

Because Paris in November can be rainy, I am also bringing my Totes Bubble, thanks to a tip from Steph at Life According to Steph. I have had this for a few weeks as well, and it works great! And yes, you can bring it on-board the cabin.

When it comes to the actual packing, I opted to try out packing cubes. I read about others who had used them, so I decided to give e-bags a try, and I'm glad I did. They made a huge difference. Everything is organized and I still have room in my carry-on. My husband was skeptical, but I am definitely going to get him a set as well.

As for clothes, I am bringing anchor pieces that work together in neutral colors, like dark jeans, black trousers, neutral blouses, a black wrap dress, a black cardigan, a neutral scarf, tall black boots, and a pair of walking shoes.

Because of the restriction limiting liquids to three ounces and a one-quart bag, I am a minimalist with my cosmetics...wait...who am I kidding? I am a minimalist with cosmetics anyway. Nevertheless, mascara, concealer, eye liner and a lip gloss  share space with my moisturizer, eye drops, and deodorant.

Throw in our camera, my vitamins, my iPad and assorted chargers and that's about it, minus the obvious delicates.

My cross-body purse holds my passport, my wallet with my ID and Euros, my phone in its charging case and a protein bar...just in case.

I like options, but I also know that it's silly to over-pack.

No one wants this...

I am so excited to be heading back to Paris. It is one of my favorite places on earth. And what's better is that this week is about meandering hand-in-hand...there is no need to run around a sight see, since we've been there before. Paris is our forever city of love

How do you pack for a cold winter getaway when you have limited space available? What are your non-negotiables?
