Flying through November...Literally

November is a great month for travel. It's considered off-season or shoulder season in many destinations and you can get great deals. The drawback? Throngs of travelers in the airport security line and on the road.

November is flying for me...literally. This month, I am lucky to be traveling nearly every week and this is bliss to my nomadic soul. It's not for everyone, but for me, I'm almost giddy.

Last weekend, I was in Miami, connecting with friends and co-workers, eating the most delicious Cuban food at Versailles, the most iconic Cuban restaurant on Calle Ocho...

And later, savoring sunset (and a tasty frozen concoction) in Islamorada, in the Florida Keys.

My TSA Pre-Check that comes with Global Entry, by the way, was worth its weight in gold in getting through the security line at MIA. While it doesn't help with international departures, it saves SO much time with domestic travel and when you're in international arrivals, the Global Entry program is a huge time saver as well. Just do it. Here's how

Next weekend, it's all about travel hacking as I join my friend and fellow WITS-er, Mona, in Chicago at Frequent Traveler University

The speaker line-up is impressive. From Tiffany Funk to Chris Guillebeau, there are speakers who will be offering their best in earning and redeeming miles and points to make every traveler's wish list a reality. It has been a few years since Mona and I caught up face-to-face, so this will be a real treat.

And then, for Thanksgiving, we are crossing the Pond and spending the week in London.

Despite traveling domestically for years and afflicted with wanderlust for a lifetime, London was my first experience with international solo travel. I haven't been there since 2009 and this will be our first time together, but we're ready.

My husband wants a beer at Ye Olde Mitre Inn, I want to explore what's new at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and of course, we're hoping to score great seats at a show in the West End, like in 2009, when I got second row pit seat for Les Miserables.

So, my friends, I will see you on the other side of November. What's new with you? How is your month going?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Exploring Dublin: The Guinness Storehouse

The Señor is a beer lover, and when we landed in Dublin for a few days, a trip to the Guinness Storehouse, Ireland's most popular tourist attraction, soared to the top of our itinerary.

Imagine that?! An old beer factory trumps the Blarney Stone and the Book of Kells as Ireland's most popular tourist attraction!

Designed as a seven story pint glass, the Guinness Storehouse gives visitors an interactive history of the Irish brew that culminates with a pint on the famous rooftop Gravity Bar.

The tour begins with the history of Arthur Guinness and his 9,000 year old lease, signed in 1759.

On the first floor, visitors learn about the four ingredients that go into Guinness: water, barley, hops, and yeast.

The water used in Guinness manufacturing comes from the Wicklow Mountains, not the River Liffey. The water rights were part of the original 1759 lease negotiated by Guinness.

Barley

And hops

Each floor offers an interactive exhibit teaching visitors about the Guinness history. There are plenty of spaces for photo opps.

The Guinness story, told in the perfect pint.

Visitors are given a free pint of Guinness, which they can enjoy in the Perfect Pint bar, where you can learn how to pour the perfect pint and later, receive a certificate. Or you can enjoy your Guinness in the rooftop Gravity Bar.

I learned the fine art of pouring the perfect Guinness.

And, since I'm not a beer drinker, the Señor was doubly blessed. He poured the perfect pint and then enjoyed my beer in the rooftop bar.

When you start to get hungry, you can eat in the Storehouse's full-service restaurant, The Brewery Bar, or you can help yourself to the snack bar's specialty, Guinness Stew.

So good!

And shop all things Guinness to your heart's content.

Even though I'm not a beer drinker, I had a great time at the Guinness Storehouse. The museum is very user friendly, with handsets for non-English speakers, and the interactive layout brings the history to life.

If you're lucky enough to visit Dublin, make the Guiness Storehouse part of your itinerary.

Sláinte!

Have you ever been to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin? Did you enjoy your pint in the pouring room or in the Gravity Bar?

Ezaro: Waterfalls to the Sea in Galicia, Spain

In the Galician coastal village of Dumbria, in the province of A Coruña, on Spain's Death Coast, is an attraction unique to Europe.

The waterfalls of Ezaro, or Cascada Ezaro, located at the foot of Mount Pindo, are fed by the River Xallas the largest river feeding waterfalls that empty into the Atlantic Ocean. Scotland and some of the fjords in Norway have similar streams, but these are said to be the largest.

Small, but scenic, the road to the top of the Mirador, or lookout point, has a 30 degree gradient. It's not long, only a bit over a mile (1.9 km) but it is steep, seeing over an 800 feet (250 meters) difference in that short distance, averaging a 13-29% gradient.

Even more remarkable was the fact that part of the Vuelta a España, a multiple stage bicycle race, took on this road as part of its tour, making it one the steepest roads a Spanish bike ever taken on in a road race.

The views at the top are grand and the sunsets, spectacular. Sadly, once we got to the top on this day, we were in a cloud of fog. But we took advantage of a photo with the family, nonetheless.
La familia

On a clear day, you can see the Cape of Finisterre, the beach at Carnota, and Corcubion Bay.  Here is one visitor's trek up the road to the top to capture sunset. It's gorgeous!

Visitors can walk close the falls on tiered wooden walkways, with various lookout points that make fun photo opps.

And rocks along the bank of the river where you can climb and explore.

But no swimming.

There is a small river delta and marina before the river hits the beach.

And there are places for picnicking along the river's shore.

The Falls at Ezaro, or Cascada Ezaro, may be unknown outside of Spain, or even outside of Galicia, but they made for a lovely after-siesta walk and a place to explore some of the natural beauty this region has to offer.

What is one area of your world, virtually unknown to most, but worth a visit and some exploration?

Fun at the Bean: Smiles at Chicago's Cloud Gate and A Linkup

The people watching is spectacular. First timers and residents alike can spend an afternoon watching tourist explore the fun-house mystique of Chicago's Cloud Gate, also known as The Bean for its elliptical shape.

Located in Millennium Park, Cloud Gate, by Anish Kapoor, is the British artist's first outdoor public art piece in the United States.

It's a looker. Meant to resemble liquid mercury, the piece is made of highly polished stainless steel plates (with no visible seams) that reflect the Chicago skyline and the clouds above.

Selfies underneath The Bean with my friend and tour guide, Mona.

Measuring 66 feet long and 33 feet high, and weighing in at 110 tons, the elliptical sculpture is among the largest of its kind in the world. There is a 12 foot high arch, the "gate" that draws visitors inside a mirrored concave chamber which produces a funhouse effect of reflection and distortion.

Be sure to look up.

One of the perks of travel is discovering the fun touristy attractions that provide great photo opps and lots of smiles and giggles. These spots may be cliched and teeming with tourists, but who cares? On longer trips, there is time for travel off the beaten path. When you visit a place for a short time, such as my weekend in Chicago, you hit the biggies. And Cloud Gate is a Chicago must-see.

When you travel, do you stay off the tourist route or do you hit the major attractions first?

I am thrilled to be part of a new travel series with Angie from Reasons to DressWe invite you to share your reasons for travel, both domestic and abroad. Share your favorite spots, your favorite tips, and your reasons to travel.
