Why Wait? Tell Them Now

Father's Day is this weekend. Bloggers everywhere are pulling together gift guides, and advertisers are selling all things Dad.

And it's a nice idea to shower someone with special treats, but if it's done in relative isolation, it's missing the mark.

This video about fathers and their children came across my media feed last week and it's a good one.

If you're lucky enough to have your dad in your life, tell him what he means to you. Don't wait.

Time is precious. He has enough stuff.

Your time, your words, your love...they're the best gifts of all.

And if Father's Day is a struggle, because of circumstances of loss or unfulfilled expectations, I wish you peace and healing and the opportunity to tell someone you do love what he or she means to you.

This weekend, I will celebrate my father, and I will tell him what he means to me, because he means the world to me.

Happy Father's Day!

  1. This is so sweet and true! We should tell our loved ones all the time, not just on a certain designated day! I love your photos of your dad! I love seeing old photos of people when they were growing up! :)

  2. You and your dad are so sweet together :) And while I'm not sure if I'm calling my father this Sunday, I know I'm calling my stepdad. Such a good reminder, thank you :)

  3. Great message Kelly, it goes for more than just fathers. This holiday is rough for those who have lost their fathers, it can be almost unbearable sometimes for me as a blogger because of the father's day pitches that land in my inbox.

  5. This is so true Kelly! The past few years I've asked my Dad what he could use for Fathers Day and he always says 'nothing'. He just loves when I come to visit and spend some time with him. And truly that's what I love too. As I'm getting older I realize my time with my parents is becoming more limited and that scares me. I know they won't be around forever and I see how tough it was in my Dad when his parents passed away. Tell them NOW is right!

  8. Such a thoughtful, loving filled Post Kelly. I just love that photo of your Dad with you slightly in the background on your wedding day. I so agree with you on making the most of the moment to those we love, sort of like that old James Taylor song, shower the people you love with love... so, so true. And, I love that your Post arrived in my email box today, YAY! No more worry that I might be missing a post! Happy Father's Day to your Dad!

  14. Jill, you are spot on. Sometimes it's overwhelming to realize that our time together is limited, and sometimes I find I pull back as I see them become increasingly "mortal." But time together is all they want. And in the end, it's all I want too.

  18. It's a great video; I had to share it. What a blessing we have in our dads. While Sunday is a great day to shower him with accolades, every day is a great day to tell someone what he or she means to you. Happy Father's Day to your Dad too. :-)
