Happy Birthday, Mr. Rogers

Today would have been Fred Rogers' 87th birthday. His gentle spirit touched millions of lives; mine included.

The greatest gift you can ever give, he said, is your honest self. And he did.
Children saw that. Parents saw that. Educators saw that.

Mr. Rogers didn't need fancy animation. He didn't talk down to children. He was honest, kind, playful, and informative. He wanted children to love themselves and others. What more could we ask of children, or ourselves?

So, happy birthday, Mr. Rogers. You were loved. You are missed.

Did you love Mr. Rogers as well? If you have children in your life, have you shared him with them?

  1. Yes, I definitely loved Mr. Rogers! Those are such good quotes of his. I remember watching him when I was young; he really felt like a trusting, caring friend. Now I think I'll find him on Youtube for the kids I baby-sit for :)

  2. One of my very first memories ever is waving goodbye to Mr. Rogers as we were moving from one home (& one state) to another, all our stuff packed in the moving truck and car.

  3. Loved Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. I used to watch him with my son...."Won't you be my neighbor?"

  4. It took me until becoming an adult before I fully appreciated Mr. Roger's and his good, kind, inspiring, and instructional contributions to so many children. Today, I do miss those truly unique 'icons' as Mr. Roger's for the world could certainly use more open generosity simply inviting the question: "Won't you Be My Neighbor?"

  12. I was an adult before I truly appreciated him. What a gentle soul! He understood and respected children and their needs. Slow paced, maybe, but children are so overstimulated in every other realm. His show was a nice change of pace.
